Mijas Golf is located in a quiet valley between Fuengirola and La Cala de Mijas, just 10 minutes from the beach but feeling like a completely different world. This is one of the Costa del Sol's most established golf communities, known for its spacious homes, mature surroundings, and relaxed pace of life.
Life here is closely tied to Mijas Golf Club, which has shaped the identity of the surrounding area for decades. Established in the 1970s, it became one of the Costa del Sol's most recognised courses, drawing players from across Europe. Today, it still sits at the heart of the community, creating the open green spaces and peaceful atmosphere that define the neighbourhood. Instead of busy roads and dense apartment blocks, you'll find wide streets, mature greenery, and many properties overlooking the fairways.
You're also only a few minutes away from Raquetas de Mijas. It's the area's most popular sport club, and well known all over the coast, with great padel courts, a gym, and a café.
If ball sports isn't your thing, Mijas Golf appeals to people who just enjoy an active lifestyle. The quiet roads, mature greenery and open surroundings make it a great area for walking, running and cycling too.
The atmosphere in Mijas Golf is very residential. Unlike many coastal areas that become crowded with tourists during the summer, Mijas Golf remains calm throughout the year. It's popular with retirees, families, remote workers, and second-home owners who are looking for space and calmness.
The international community here is well established. People from the UK, Scandinavia, Germany and Dutch buyers have been purchasing homes in Mijas Golf for decades, and in recent years more and more Americans. There are also a lot of Spanish living in the area. For families, you have the British school, St. Anthony's College, located in the area.
Now let's talk about the properties.
One of the biggest advantages of Mijas Golf is the amount of space you normally get when you buy a property here. Many of the villas were built during the 1980s and 1990s, when land was far less costly than today. It was standard for developers to build on large plots, wider streets and more generous room sizes, something that's becoming increasingly rare on newer builds all over Costa del Sol. You'll also find townhouses and apartment complexes, and they are generally also much more spacious.
But the real upside in my opinion is the overall high quality build across the area, and with that beautiful Andalusian style in mind. Unlike the rapid expansion in the nearby La Cala area, there has been relatively little new construction here, which helps preserve the mature character of the neighbourhood. That said, there are some new villa developments ongoing, and in that modern minimalist design.
Let's talk about the downsides.
One thing to know is that this is very much a car-must place to live. You are living up on the hill and the area itself is pretty big, and for public transportation to and from the area, you have to rely on buses. While there are a few restaurants, cafés, and a minimarket in the area itself, for supermarkets and most everyday services you need to drive down to Fuengirola. On the good side, it's only a 5-10 minute drive away.
And with that, you're not living right by the beach — and also because you're set inland from the coast, it tends to be 2-3 degrees warmer here than in the coastal areas.
Then there's the views. You do find some properties with distant sea views, but most homes instead look out over the golf courses, the greenery, or the mountains — and for a lot of buyers, that's actually part of the appeal.
Another consideration is that since most homes are from the 80s and 90s, in many cases new home owners do make some renovations to the properties, mainly for kitchens.
When it comes to rental potential, short-term rentals are mainly attracting golfers who want to golf intensely for a few days, or families looking for larger villas with private pools, while long-term rentals are popular with professionals, retirees and families relocating to the Costa del Sol who prefer a quieter residential living. As a long-term investment, Mijas Golf has historically offered steady appreciation rather than sudden price jumps.
If you're a golfer, two championship courses sit right on your doorstep. If you're not, you still get the open green views, peaceful Andalusian surroundings, and lower traffic that make for a calm lifestyle. If that sounds good to you — and you're okay with driving for most errands — Mijas Golf could be right for you.
