La Mairena is a hilltop urbanization sitting 400 metres above sea level, 10 minutes from the coast, right above Elviria.

The Story of La Mairena

The story of La Mairena starts with a man from Lebanon — Gabriel Massoud. In the 80s, he bought two million square metres of empty land with one vision: to create an exclusive residential area near Marbella right in the middle of a green mountain forest. And 40 years later, his vision has really become reality. Only 5% of the land he bought has been built on. The rest of La Mairena is pure nature — cork oak forest, pine trees, and clean air. So you are literally surrounded by nature. People run and bike here in the morning, walk the forest in the evening. Just be aware, since La Mairena is located on a mountain, it's very hilly, so moving around the area is a real workout.

Families & Security

For families, La Mairena is arguably one of the best spots on the Costa del Sol. Safe, quiet streets, space for kids to actually move around, and the popular private international German School is located right here. You're not stuck in traffic trying to get to school every morning.

Many communities are gated, and the whole area is very private. That's because there's almost nothing commercial up here — the only people you'll see walking around are the people who actually live there. No random foot traffic, no strangers passing through, just residents. That obviously makes a real difference in terms of security.

Properties in La Mairena

Here you find a lot of apartment complexes, either completely new-built or inspired by traditional Andalusian architecture. Most of it was developed in the late 90s to early 2000s — with impressive mountain and valley views, and from some properties you have Mediterranean sea views as well. Most developments are like mini resorts, with their own amenities such as pools, gyms and, in some cases, even their own golf courses.
